Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in nearly 25 years damages buildings, leaving 4 dead

TAIPEI, Taiwan, April 3, 2024 (AP) — Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in a quarter century rocked the island during the morning rush hour Wednesday, damaging buildings and highways and causing the deaths of four people. Taiwan’s national fire agency said four people died in Hualien County and at least 57 were injured in the quake that struck just before 8 a.m. The local United Daily News reported three hikers died in rockslides in Taroko National Park near the offshore epicenter. A five-story building in Hualien appeared heavily damaged, collapsing its first floor and leaving the rest leaning at a 45-degree angle.

India’s top yoga guru faces judges’ ire in misleading ads case

NEW DELHI, April 2 (Reuters): India’s top court on Tuesday warned the nation’s most popular yoga guru and his company of stern legal action for not complying with its directive to stop advertisements saying traditional ayurvedic medicines can fully cure some diseases. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, dressed in a saffron-coloured robe, and his co-founder Acharya Balkrishna were present in the Supreme Court when the judges issued their warning in contempt proceedings against their firm Patanjali Ayurved, which sells hugely popular ayurvedic medicines. The case relates to the Indian Medical Association’s allegations that Patanjali disparages conventional medicines and continued publishing ads

Supreme Court grants bail to AAP leader Sanjay Singh in excise policy case

New Delhi [India], April 2 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the release of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on bail during the pendency of trial in a money laundering case related to the excise policy case. The top court passed down the ruling during a hearing on Singh’s plea challenging his arrest and remand in the money laundering case. Enforcement Directorate informed the apex court that the agency had no objection to Singh getting bail. This is a developing story. More details are awaited.

Delhi High Court gives last chance to Govt, opposition parties to reply to plea against use of INDIA acronym

New Delhi, Apr 2 (PTI) The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted a last opportunity to the Centre and several opposition parties to respond to a petition seeking to restrain them from using the acronym INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance). A bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora said that the replies be filed within one week to the public interest litigation which alleged that by using the INDIA acronym, the parties were taking “undue advantage in the name of our country”.
