New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) The Congress on Monday attacked the Modi government over the rise in prices during the festive season, saying “jumlebaaz” Prime Minister Narendra Modi must answer how long will the common people have to endure this “economic catastrophe”.
The opposition party claimed that inflation has spiralled out of control, and said it is the consequence of the failure of those who beat the drum of ‘achche din’.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared the screenshot of a media report which claimed that rising prices during the festive season are taking a heavy toll on people’s pockets with shoppers visiting the markets having to pay significantly higher prices for everything.
“The public is feeling suffocated by the rising inflation under the Modi government. Inflation has spiraled out of control, reaching historic levels,” Ramesh said in his post in Hindi on X.

“From household kitchens to electronic goods, the pace of inflation – moving faster than a bullet train – is now directly robbing the pockets of poor and middle-class families,” he claimed.
During the festive season, while the prices of spices, dry fruits, and sweets are soaring, there are also reports of a 10% to 25% hike in the prices of electronics like TVs and refrigerators, as well as kitchenware, he said.
To make matters worse, the RBI’s decision to raise the repo rate is set to increase the burden of loans and EMIs, Ramesh pointed out.
“The failure of those who trumpeted the arrival of ‘achhe din’ has resulted in a situation where running a household has become an ordeal,” he said.
Everyone is feeling the pinch of inflation, yet PM Modi remains oblivious to the public’s suffering, “busy instead with playing his political tune”, Ramesh alleged.
Official inflation figures for the last month are due to be released this evening; however, economists predict that retail inflation could rise for the sixth consecutive month to reach 5.60%, a 23-month high, he said.
“Jumlebaaz Modi ji must answer: how long will the common people have to endure this economic catastrophe?” Ramesh said.
The Congress has been flagging the issue of rising prices and accusing the government of following “anti-people” policies.
The government, however, has dismissed the claims and pointed to the GDP numbers.
