China backs efforts by Pakistan, India to achieve lasting ceasefire, foreign minister says

BEIJING, May 20 (Reuters) – China welcomes and supports efforts by Pakistan and India to handle their differences through dialogue and to achieve a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said. Wang made the comments during a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar in Beijing on Tuesday, the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement. Pakistan and India halted their worst fighting in nearly three decades after agreeing to a ceasefire on May 10, following diplomacy and pressure from the United States.

IB chief Tapan Deka gets one-year service extension

New Delhi [India], May 20 (ANI): The Central government has extended the tenure of Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Tapan Kumar Deka by another year, affirming his continued leadership at the helm of India’s premier intelligence agency. The extension was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to an official order issued on Tuesday, Deka’s service will be extended for a period of one year beyond June 30, 2025, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier. The extension was granted by relaxing the provisions under Fundamental Rule (FR) 56(d) and Rule 16(1A)

Majority of Indian districts face high heatwave risk, study shows

NEW DELHI, May 20 (Reuters) – Nearly 60% of Indian districts, home to three-quarters of the population, face a “high to very high” risk from extreme heat, with rising night-time temperatures and humidity compounding the health impact, a study has found.
