Mumbai, Sep 26 (PTI) Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty tumbled nearly 1 per cent on Friday, marking their sixth consecutive day of decline, following heavy selling in pharma and IT shares as US President Donald Trump announced 100 per cent duties on branded drugs from next month. The 30-share BSE Sensex tanked 733.22 points or 0.90 per cent to settle at a three-week low of 80,426.46. During the day, it dropped 827.27 points or 1 per cent to 80,332.41. Supreme Court dismisses plea seeking ban on Salman Rushdie’s book

New Delhi, Sep 26 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to ban Salman Rushdie’s controversial novel “The Satanic Verses”. The plea came up for hearing before a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta. The counsel appearing for the petitioners referred to the Delhi High Court’s November last year order. The high court had closed the proceedings on a petition challenging the Rajiv Gandhi government’s decision to ban the import of “The Satanic Verses” in 1988, saying since authorities have failed to produce the relevant notification, it has to be presumed

Gold gains Rs 171 to Rs 1,12,800/10 g; silver retreat from record high in futures trade

New Delhi, Sep 26 (PTI) Gold prices climbed Rs 171 to Rs 1,12,800 per 10 grams in the domestic futures market on Friday despite a largely flat trend in the overseas market, while silver pulled back from its record peak and declined Rs 400 to Rs 1,36,656 per kilogram. On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold for October delivery rose Rs 171 or 0.15 per cent to Rs 1,12,800 per 10 grams in a turnover of 2,834 lots. Similarly, the December contract traded higher by Rs 56 or 0.05 per cent at Rs 1,13,927 per 10 grams in 13,573 lots.
