Hopes of finding survivors dim a week after catastrophic Nepal flood

Kathmandu, Sept 2 (Reuters) – Hopes of finding more survivors among the thousands still missing in Nepal were fading, authorities said on Wednesday, a week after a glacier collapse in the Himalayas unleashed flash floods that ‌devastated the mountainous nation. At least 1,050 people have been killed and nearly 4,000 remain unaccounted for, with officials fearing many are buried under debris left by the floods that tore through towns and valleys near the Chinese border. Reuters got exclusive access to the warehouse last ‌week as food officers conducted a six-day investigation and seized goods worth nearly $80,000. A photographer saw chemicals used to remove manufacturers’ original expiry dates and ingredient labels, machines to print and apply replacements and scores of label packs for products including Lay’s potato chips and Maggi noodles. Specialised rescue teams from China, India and Nepal built temporary bridges to reach remote areas and dug through the ruins of hydropower projects, using excavators to try to rescue nearly 300 workers trapped inside tunnels. A glacier collapse on August 26 sent a deluge of ice, rock and mud sweeping through the impoverished nation’s border region with China. At

RBI back to rupee’s rescue to counter oil, Fed headwinds; steps into swaps too

Mumbai, Aug 31 (Reuters) – India’s central bank stepped in again to support the rupee on Monday, after a surge in oil prices and rising expectations of a U.S. interest-rate ‌hike combined to pressure the currency. The rupee was quoting at 95.44 to the dollar at 11:49 a.m. IST, down less than 0.1% from Friday. The currency opened weaker at 95.49 and had briefly fallen to 95.60 on the interbank order-matching system before the regular market session began.
