India forecast to face colder January, says weather office

MUMBAI, Jan 1 (Reuters) – India is set to see below-average maximum and minimum temperatures in January, the weather office said on Thursday, raising the prospect of higher yields for key winter-sown crops such as wheat, rapeseed and chickpeas. The country is also likely to experience above-average cold-wave days, particularly across central and eastern India, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director-general of the India Meteorological Department, told a virtual news conference.

New Delhi, Jan 1 (PTI) Gold prices started the new year on a firm note on Thursday, rising by Rs 640 to Rs 1,38,340 per 10 grams in the national capital, according to the All India Sarafa Association. The yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity had closed at Rs 1,37,700 per 10 grams on Wednesday. Mumbai, Jan 1 (PTI) The rupee depreciated 10 paise to close at 89.98 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday, the first trading session of 2026, as sustained foreign fund outflows and a negative trend in domestic equities dented investor sentiments. Forex traders said the USD/INR pair traded in a tight range, as support from easing crude oil prices was offset by a positive tone in the US dollar index and foreign fund outflows. Mumbai, Jan 1 (PTI) Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ended flat on the first trading session of 2026, as massive selling in ITC stocks and foreign fund outflows diminished the initial enthusiasm. The 30-share BSE Sensex dipped 32 points or 0.04 per cent to settle at 85,188.60 on Thursday. During the day, it hit a high of 85,451.70 and a low of 85,101.52, fluctuating 350.18 points.
