Trump administration raises US refugee cap, but only for white South Africans

WASHINGTON, May 27, 2026 (AP) — The Trump administration said Tuesday that it will admit an additional 10,000 white South Africans into the U.S. as refugees this year, increasing its historically low annual cap but still blocking people from other countries from entering through the program. Trump suspended the refugee program on his first day in office and, since then, has turned it into a vehicle to allow Afrikaners — a group of white South Africans descended mainly from Dutch settlers — into the U.S. Advocates say the decision to focus a decades-old program on one group has left people

Mumbai, May 27 (PTI) Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty drifted lower after rising in early trade on Wednesday amid volatile trends in the equity market as investors remained cautious due to geopolitical uncertainties and fresh foreign fund outflows. Fresh US military strikes in southern Iran have weakened hopes of an immediate diplomatic resolution, reviving concerns around energy supply disruptions, an expert said. The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 127.83 points to 76,137.53 in early trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty went up by 36.45 points to 23,950.15. However, both the benchmark indices failed to carry forward the momentum and were trading lower.

Mumbai, May 27 (PTI) The rupee slipped 8 paise to 95.78 against US dollar in early trade on Wednesday on elevated crude oil prices as fresh US strikes dampened optimism for an imminent US-Iran peace deal. Forex traders said escalating US-Iran conflict is again boosting safe-haven demand for the dollar. Moreover, Brent oil remained well bid at USD 98 levels as risk aversion, geopolitical risk and war clouds in West Asia kept it higher. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened on a positive note at 95.60, but soon pared the gains and fell to 95.78 against the
