Plummeting rupee could delay India rate cuts, analysts say

MUMBAI, Jan 15 (Reuters) – Some analysts are pushing back expectations for interest rate cuts in India as the rupee’s slump to record lows fans worries about inflation, even as growth in Asia’s third-largest economy slows. The weaker currency could add to elevated inflation through costlier imports, while a cut in interest rates could dampen already tepid capital flows, they said. A majority of analysts polled by Reuters in November had expected Indian rates to be cut in February at the earliest, but the rapid currency slump has prompted many analysts to change their calls. Lucknow, Jan 14 (PTI) The BJP Tuesday nominated Chandrabhan Paswan as its candidate for the assembly bypoll to Uttar Pradesh’s Milkipur seat in Ayodhya district which is scheduled to be held next month. The Samajwadi Party has fielded Faizabad MP Awadhesh Prasad’s son Ajit Prasad for the bypoll to the seat. Awadhesh Prasad was the MLA of Milkipur before be got elected to the Lok Sabha necessiting the bypoll. KOCHI, India, Jan 14 (Reuters) – Police in India’s southern state of Kerala have arrested 44 men accused of raping an 18-year-old girl over a period of five years, a police official said on Tuesday, in a case that has shocked the coastal tourist resort. The victim, an athlete who belongs to the so-called lower caste community known as Dalits, told police in a statement that she was sexually abused by 62 people over a period of five years. Islamabad, Jan 14 (PTI) Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi on Tuesday secured interim bail in more than a dozen cases despite telling the court she has lost faith in the justice system of Pakistan. Anti-terrorism court Judge Tahir Abbas Supra, who presided over the hearing, granted Bushra interim bail until February 7 in 13 cases related to the D-Chowk protests apart from another case involving the killing of paramilitary rangers during the demonstration last year.
