SIR deadline likely be extended in Bengal as EC reviews top court directives: Official

Kolkata, Jan 21 (PTI) The EC is considering extending the deadline for the SIR exercise in West Bengal, with the publication of the final voters’ list likely to be deferred beyond the scheduled date of February 14, an official of the poll panel said on Wednesday. Compliance with multiple directions issued by the Supreme Court may make it difficult to adhere to the existing timeline, he said, adding that no final decision has been taken so far. “Implementing all the Supreme Court’s instructions within the existing timeline is challenging. New Delhi, Jan 21 (PTI) Extending the record-breaking rally, gold prices surged to a new high near Rs 1.60 lakh per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday, while silver scaled a fresh peak of Rs 3.34 lakh per kg amid a worldwide chase for safe-haven assets. According to the All India Sarafa Association, the precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity soared by Rs 6,500, or 4.24 per cent, to Rs 1,59,700 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). Mumbai, Jan 21 (PTI) Stock market benchmarks ended with losses for the third straight session on Wednesday as heightened geopolitical tensions, weak global peers and persistent foreign fund outflows unnerved investors.
