Rape convict Asaram Bapu gets interim bail on medical grounds till March 31

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to jailed self-styled godman Asaram in connection with a 2013 rape case on medical grounds until March 31. A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal directed Asaram not to meet his followers following his release. The top court stated that the 86-year-old Asaram was suffering from various age-related health conditions, including a heart ailment. The Supreme Court had earlier sought a response from the Gujarat government regarding Asaram’s plea for suspension of the life sentence awarded to him by a Gandhinagar court in 2023.

At least 9 miners are trapped in a coal mine in Assam

GUWAHATI, India, January 7, 2025 (AP) — At least nine workers are trapped inside a coal mine in Assam, officials said Tuesday, as authorities summoned the army to help in the rescue operation. The miners were trapped on Monday morning in the Umrangso area in Dimapur Hasao district, some 125 miles (200 kilometers) south of the state capital, Guwahati. The workers are “feared trapped 300 feet below the ground after water gushed in from a nearby unused mine. We are mobilizing resources to rescue them,” said Kaushik Rai, a local government minister who is monitoring the rescue at the site.

Indian car dealers’ sales unexpectedly drop in December, industry body says

Jan 7 (Reuters) – Indian car dealers clocked a surprise 2% drop in sales in December, with high year-end discounts boosting demand only for a handful of showroom owners, a dealers’ body said on Tuesday. Sales dropped to 293,465 units in the month from 299,351 units last year, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA).
