New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI) In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Wednesday proposed to stay certain key provisions of the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, including the power to denotify properties declared as waqf by courts and inclusion of non-Muslims in central Waqf councils and boards. The top court proposed to pass the order, which was opposed by the Centre as it sought a detailed hearing before any such interim order. New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI) If Muslims would be allowed to be a part of Hindu religious trusts, the Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre while hearing pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. A bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and K V Viswanathan asked solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, on how “waqf by user” can be disallowed as many will not have requisite documents to get such waqfs registered. “Waqf by user” refers to a practice where a property is recognised as a religious or charitable

Mumbai, Apr 16 (PTI) Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed higher for the third straight day on Wednesday following buying in banking stocks and fresh foreign fund inflows as retail inflation slipping to near six-year lows raised hopes of further rate cuts. Defying a weak global market trend, the 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 309.40 points or 0.40 per cent to settle at a two-week high of 77,044.29 in a volatile session. After a weak start, the index moved between gains and losses during the session. It hit a high of 77,110.23 and a low of 76,543.77, gyrating 566.46 points.

Rupee gains 12 paise to settle at 85.68 against US dollar

Mumbai, Apr 16 (PTI) The rupee sustained its rally for the third straight session and settled with a gain of 12 paise at 85.68 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday, boosted by the renewed inflow of foreign funds and a weak American currency. Positive domestic macroeconomic numbers amid the 90-day pause on US reciprocal tariffs triggered a buying rush in equities, strengthening the local currency, according to forex traders. Also, lower crude prices in international markets supported the domestic unit, they added. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 85.66 and moved between the intraday high
