Govt decides to include caste enumeration in next census exercise

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) In a major decision, the government on Wednesday decided to include caste enumeration in the forthcoming census exercise in a “transparent” manner. Announcing the decisions taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the census comes under the purview of the Centre but some states have done caste enumeration in the name of surveys. Alleging that the states ruled by opposition parties have done caste surveys for political reasons, the minister said it is Modi government’s resolve to transparently include caste enumeration in the forthcoming pan-India census exercise. Mumbai, Apr 30 (PTI) The rupee surged 38 paise to 84.58 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday as trade-deal hopes and foreign fund inflows boosted investor sentiments. US President Donald Trump’s statement that tariff talks with India are in a positive direction enthused investors, forex dealers said. However, geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan and a muted sentiment in domestic equities weighed on investor sentiments. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 85.15 and moved between the intra-day high of 84.47 and the low of 85.15 against the greenback. The unit ended the session at 84.58

Gold futures fall Rs 455 to Rs 95,137/10 g

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) Gold prices on Wednesday declined Rs 455 to Rs 95,137 per 10 grams in futures trade amid muted spot demand. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold contracts for June delivery traded lower by Rs 455 or 0.48 per cent to Rs 95,137 per 10 grams in a business turnover of 16,942 lots. Analysts attributed the fall in gold prices to weak global cues. In the international markets, gold futures fell 0.28 per cent to USD 3,308.04 per ounce in New York.

Youths, older adults in India ‘flourishing’ more than those middle-aged: Global study

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) In India, youths and older adults are flourishing more those middle-aged, a study of over 2 lakh people across 22 countries has suggested. The ‘Global Flourishing Study’, conducted by researchers from institutes, including the US Harvard University and University of Bremen, Germany, is envisaged to understand factors that govern the well-being of an individual and a community. Flourishing was defined as a state in which all aspects of a person’s life are good. In Wave 1 of the study, questionnaire responses from 202,898 people from 22 countries, spanning six continents, were analysed. Findings are published
