Sensex, Nifty tumble 1 pc on weak global trends, geopolitical tensions

Mumbai, Jun 12 (PTI) Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty tanked 1 per cent on Thursday, in tandem with weak global market trends amid growing tensions in the Middle East. The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 823.16 points or 1 per cent to settle at 81,691.98. During the day, it plunged 991.98 points or 1.20 per cent to 81,523.16. The broader NSE Nifty tumbled 253.20 points or 1.01 per cent to 24,888.20. Fresh foreign fund outflows also dented investors’ sentiment, traders said. Gold jumps Rs 850 to Rs 99,340/10 g; silver slips Rs 100

New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI) Gold prices jumped Rs 850 to Rs 99,340 per 10 grams in the national capital on Thursday amid a rise in precious metal prices in the overseas markets, according to the All India Sarafa Association. The yellow metal of 99.5 per cent purity climbed Rs 800 to Rs 98,800 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). However, silver prices went lower by Rs 100 to Rs 1,07,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Thursday. The most traded gold contracts for August delivery bounced by Rs 1,585 to trade at Rs 98,289 per 10 grams.

Rupee falls 7 paise to settle at 85.60 against US dollar

Mumbai, Jun 12 (PTI) The rupee declined 7 paise to close to 85.60 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday amid a steep fall in the domestic equity markets and a rise in global crude oil prices. However, a weaker dollar against major currencies capped the losses, forex traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 85.43 against the US dollar and traded in the range of 85.43-85.65 before closing at 85.60 (provisional), down 7 paise from its previous close. New York, Jun 12 (PTI) Indian-origin physician Bobby Mukkamala has been sworn in as the 180th president of the American Medical Association, becoming the first physician of Indian heritage to lead the organisation. Mukkamala, an otolaryngologist — an ear, nose, and throat specialist — took the oath on Tuesday, according to a statement by the association. Mukkamala has been active in the AMA since residency and is chair of the organisation’s Substance Use and Pain Care Task Force.
