MUMBAI, May 23 (Reuters) – The RBI (Reserve Bank of India) is examining shareholding norms and licensing rules for banks as part of a broader review, Governor Sanjay Malhotra told the Times of India in an interview, less than a month after Japanese lender Sumitomo Mitsui signed a deal to acquire 20% in Yes Bank. While India permits 74% foreign direct investment in private banks, it restricts a single financial entity from holding more than 15% unless a regulatory exemption is granted. Mumbai, May 23 (PTI) Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty rebounded in early trade on Friday driven by buying in blue-chip IT stocks and a firm trend in Asian equity markets. After a flat start to the trade, the 30-share BSE benchmark gauge Sensex later bounced back and climbed 219.05 points to 81,171.04. The NSE Nifty went up by 111.2 points to 24,720.90. Mumbai, May 23 (PTI) The rupee depreciated 15 paise to 86.10 against the American currency in early trade on Friday, as foreign institutional investors continued with their sell-off due to a narrowing bond yield differential. Forex traders said speculation of an RBI rate cut in the upcoming MPC meeting, fuelled by softening food and energy prices, is also weighing on short-term rupee sentiment, even though such a move may bolster growth in the longer-term.
