India rejects US charge of surplus capacity in textiles, steel

June 10, 2026
Politics

NEW DELHI, June 10 (Reuters) – India does not have surplus manufacturing capacity in textiles and steel as alleged in the ‌U.S. Trade Representative’s Section 301 investigation, trade official Amitabh Kumar said on Wednesday. Washington has cited structural excess capacity in Indian industries from solar modules and petrochemicals to steel and textiles, as well as its 2025 goods trade surplus of $42 billion with the United States. Kumar, India’s additional trade secretary, said its textile and steel output should be assessed against the size of its population, domestic demand and growth needs, rather than in terms of absolute production. “Overcapacity

Addressing mediapersons here, Rathore said, “Instead of celebrating 12 years of Modi, the BJP should explain why his government failed to resolve the issues of farmers, inflation and unemployment”. He remarked that what is important is not how long a prime minister remained in office but what he did for the development and prosperity

Mumbai, Jun 10 (PTI) The rupee appreciated 14 paise to close at 95.27 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday, amid likely intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to curb excessive volatility and prevent a further slide in the domestic unit. Forex traders said the rupee pared its initial losses and settled on a positive note as Brent crude oil prices and the US dollar index retreated from their elevated levels. Moreover, likely intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also supported the domestic unit at lower levels. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened
