General

Washington (AP): The largest monthly jump in gas prices in six decades caused a sharp spike in inflation last month, creating major challenges for the inflation-fighters at the Federal Reserve and heightening already substantial political hurdles for the White House. Consumer prices rose 3.3% in March from a year earlier, the Labor Department said Friday, up sharply from just 2.4% in February and the biggest yearly increase since May 2024. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.9% in March from February, the largest such increase in nearly four years. It’s the first read on inflation to capture the effects of the Iran war.

When Apollo 11 first landed on the lunar surface, the astronauts portrayed their accomplishment as the realization of a science fictional dream. In a televised broadcast during their return, Neil Armstrong explicitly evoked Jules Verne’s 1865 novel “From the Earth to the Moon,” calling his spaceship and crew a “modern-day Columbia” – a direct reference to the spaceship Verne imagined taking off in from Florida and landing

NEW DELHI/LONDON, April 10 (Reuters) – India’s shipping ministry has granted special permission to four vessels carrying Iranian oil – as requested by Reliance Industrie – to berth at the western port of Sikka, three industry ‌sources said. India, the world’s third-biggest oil importer and consumer, has not received a cargo from Tehran since May 2019 following U.S. pressure not to buy Iranian crude. However, the U.S. last month temporarily waived sanctions on the purchase of Iranian oil at sea to ease oil prices. The waiver is due to expire on April 19.
