Supreme Court to hear next week plea for cross-verification of votes with VVPAT

New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it would hear next week a plea by an NGO seeking cross-verification of the votes cast in EVMs with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). A bench headed by Justices Sanjiv Khanna said the plea will be listed next Tuesday or Wednesday after advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the NGO, said the matter should be heard urgently. Three ex-convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination return to Sri Lanka

Chennai, Apr 3 (PTI) Three ex-convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, all of them Sri Lankans, returned to their home country on Wednesday. Murugan alias Sriharan, Jayakumar and Robert Payas left by a Sri Lankan carrier, officials said. They were among the seven convicts in the case freed by the Supreme Court in November 2022. Post their release, they were lodged in a special camp in Tiruchirappalli. They arrived here last night and left for Colombo today. Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in nearly 25 years damages buildings, leaving 4 dead

TAIPEI, Taiwan, April 3, 2024 (AP) — Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in a quarter century rocked the island during the morning rush hour Wednesday, damaging buildings and highways and causing the deaths of four people. Taiwan’s national fire agency said four people died in Hualien County and at least 57 were injured in the quake that struck just before 8 a.m. The local United Daily News reported three hikers died in rockslides in Taroko National Park near the offshore epicenter. A five-story building in Hualien appeared heavily damaged, collapsing its first floor and leaving the rest leaning at a 45-degree angle.
