India signs 8 million deal with Russia for advanced battle tank engines

NEW DELHI, March 7 (Reuters) – India has signed a $248 million contract with Russia state arms exporter Rosoboronexport to acquire more powerful engines for its Soviet-era battle tanks, the Indian Defence Ministry said on Friday. The T-72 tank, first introduced in India in the 1970s, is the mainstay of the Indian Army’s fleet. It operates about 2,500 such tanks fitted with a 780 horsepower (HP) engine. The new acquisition of 1,000 HP engines will replace engines of the existing fleet to “enhance the battlefield mobility and offensive capability of the Indian Army”, the ministry said in a statement. Meet oldest female barber in world

TOKYO, March 7, 2025 (AP) — Meet the world’s oldest female barber: She is 108 but the slender, white-haired Japanese woman has no plans to retire anytime soon. Shitsui Hakoishi says the formal recognition by the Guinness World Records this week brought her much joy — other than her satisfied customers, that is. She was presented with an official certificate from the international franchise on Wednesday. Guinness World Records has a separate category for male barbers but the man who was certified at age 107 in 2018, Anthony Mancinelli of the United States, has died in the meantime, leaving Hakoishi

SEBI to boost transparency, including on board conflicts, chair says

MUMBAI, March 7 (Reuters) – The SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) will improve transparency in its functioning, including by revealing any conflicts of interest of its board members, as a way to build trust, Chairperson Tuhin Kanta Pandey said on Friday. Veteran finance ministry bureaucrat Pandey last week replaced Madhabi Puri Buch as the chief of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Buch, who helmed SEBI for three years, came under attack towards the end of her term after the now-shuttered Hindenburg Research alleged conflict of interest in SEBI’s investigations into the Adani group because of

Ancient humans made tools from animal bones 1.5 million years ago

WASHINGTON, March 7, 2025 (AP) — Early humans were regularly using animal bones to make cutting tools 1.5 million years ago. A newly discovered cache of 27 carved and sharpened bones from elephants and hippos found in Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge site pushes back the date for ancient bone tool use by around 1 million years. Researchers know that early people made simple tools from stones as early as 3.3 million years ago. The new discovery, published Wednesday in Nature, reveals that ancient humans “had rather more complex tool kits than previously we thought,” incorporating a variety of materials, said William
