Three years ago, Nara Chandrababu Naidu stormed out of the state assembly in anger, vowing to return only as the chief minister. On Tuesday, he appeared poised to make good on that promise, leading his Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to a resounding victory in the Andhra Pradesh assembly elections.
According to recent figures, Naidu’s TDP was ahead in 135 out of 175 assembly seats. This marks a significant political comeback for Naidu, who was arrested months earlier in connection with an alleged corruption case. The outgoing assembly had just 23 TDP members.
In the concurrent Lok Sabha elections, the TDP also performed strongly, leading in 16 out of 25 seats in the state. With allies BJP and Janasena Party showing promising results, Naidu emerges as a potential kingmaker in the national scene, crucial for the BJP-led NDA’s government formation.
