Eating pineapple before bed can boost melatonin and help you sleep better

Doctors claim that an average adult needs between six to eight hours of sleep each night. However, this is easier said than done. But pineapple that can help you sleep well at night if you eat it before bed.

Studies have shown that consuming pineapple before bed can help with this.

“Snack on some pineapple chunks as the evening winds down. Pineapple and melatonin provide vitamin C, magnesium, and fiber to enhance sleep,” say the experts.

The pineapple is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and it can also boost melatonin levels in the body by up to 240%, helping to regulate circadian rhythms and promote restful sleep. Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the brain when it gets dark, and it plays a crucial role in synchronising our internal clock, or sleep-wake cycle.

A study conducted by Thai universities found that out of 15 tropical fruits analysed, pineapple contains one of the highest concentrations of melatonin (68,092 ng/g in dry weight). Combined with its serotonin and tryptophan content—compounds that affect mood and rest—pineapple becomes a natural weapon against insomnia.

While pineapple is a great choice for for naturally increasing melatonin levels, it is not the only option. Foods such as eggs and fish contain this hormone in the animal kingdom. In the plant world, walnuts, certain types of mushrooms, whole grains, and legumes are notable.

These foods not only improve sleep but also provide essential nutrients for overall health. Pineapple is more than just a tasty treat for bedtime.
